Postcard From L.A.: A Weekend Of Openings With Laure Heriard Dubreuil And Aaron Young

The Webster’s Laure Heriard Dubreuil and fiancé Aaron Young were in L.A. for the weekend for the opening of two shows featuring Young’s art: No Fucking Way, his solo show at The Company Gallery, and Rebel, the James Franco-curated homage to Rebel Without a Cause at MOCA. (For more on Rebel, check out our coverage of the opening party and our Q&A with Franco.) Laure sent back a few shots from her trip, which included plenty of art, plenty of parties, and (naturally) a little L.A. vintage shopping.

Johnny Depp’s Big Head Causes Drama On Set, Plus More Of The Day’s Top News

Tim Burton’s remake of Dark Shadows, starring Johnny Depp (pictured), hit theaters this past weekend. There has been plenty of buzz surrounding three-time Academy Award-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood’s clothes for the film, but the L.A. Times recently learned the hardest part about putting the wardrobe together—finding the right pair of vintage sunglasses (a key wardrobe piece) for Depp, because apparently, heads back in 1972 were a bit smaller. Surfer, Skater, Chola, Star

For many in fashion, L.A. is a full coast away from where the real action is. “Style in L.A. is sort of an oxymoron,” admits former L.A. Times writer and journalist Melissa Magsaysay. “It’s jeans and it’s T-shirts. But what’s wrong with that?” In hopes of changing the conversation surrounding style in the City of Angels, Magsaysay penned City of Style: Exploring Los Angeles Fashion, from Bohemian to Rock.

Cause Célèbre

Actor, writer, director, student, and sometime model James Franco has added another line to his curriculum vitae: museum curator. His new show, Rebel, for which he enlisted Paul McCarthy, Ed Ruscha, Harmony Korine, Aaron Young, and Terry Richardson, among others, to riff on the complexities and legends surrounding the iconic James Dean film Rebel Without a Cause, opened at L.A.'s Museum of Contemporary Art on Saturday night.

The Heavenly Host (Committee)

Fresh from his Malibu event to reveal an Angel—that’d be Gisele Bündchen—as his new campaign face, David Yurman headed for Heaven. Yurman joined the Art of Elysium’s Jennifer Howell last night at the L.A. home of artist and musician Mark Mothersbaugh (famously of Devo, to say nothing of many Wes Anderson soundtracks) to toast the host committee of the nonprofit’s 2013 Heaven Gala.

Deer In The Spotlights

Long regarded as the go-to shopping destination for a certain discerning set of Angelenos, Des Kohan ’s namesake store holds a reliable, oft exclusive stock of merchandise from designers local (Juan Carlos Obando) and abroad (Alaïa). But it’s that energy of exclusives that has kept Kohan’s shop on the map despite its off-the-beaten-path location on South Cloverdale Avenue. The shop owner’s latest endeavor, debuting today, is DEER, a 20-piece accessory collection conceived alongside L.A.-based jewelry designer Annie Costello Brown.

‘Trique’s Treat; A Rebel Yell; Collecting: “An Incurable Illness”; And More

Fashion’s newest viral video hero is Patrick Pope—a.k.a. P’Trique—who lambasts fashionese in his popular “Shit Fashion Girls Say” series. He’s already got high-profile sponsorship, thanks to Maybelline, but a Met ball ticket apparently still eludes him. What would he wear if he found a last-minute invite? “An amalgamation of harnesses, cutouts, and metallics…with the theme of, like, an underwater Chanel-y sea bride. Like if Ariel was alive today and friends with Karl, but more nouveau.” [WWD]

Toms Shoes Signs Tracy Feith

How do you like to wear your Toms? Bold, bare, and with a side of Tracy Feith, s'il vous plaît. Blake Mycoskie, founder of Toms Shoes, has tapped Feith as a full-time designer for the L.A.-based company after months of consulting work. His main mission will be launching Toms+ this fall, a new label of kicks set at a pricier fare ($104 to $140) than typical Toms.
